Haiti - Health : Launch of the national project «My Cleanliness, My Health»

The Ministry of Public Health, through its Directorate of Health Promotion and Environmental Protection, launched the national project "Pwòpte m se sante m" (My Cleanliness, My Health) this week.

This strategic initiative aims to sustainably improve the precarious hygiene and sanitation conditions in prisons, camps for displaced persons, and district hospitals, which are breeding grounds for infections and epidemics (cholera, scabies, parasitic diseases, etc...), and significantly reduce the risks of infections and epidemics among these vulnerable populations.

The project is structured around four specific objectives, measures, and clear operational results.

1 - Intensive sanitation of prisons, ensuring that these facilities benefit from a clean environment that meets hygiene standards. In prisons, the focus is on decontamination, disinfection of dormitories and sanitary facilities, fumigation against vectors, and the rehabilitation of drinking water points;

2 - Regular health support in the camps housing significant numbers of displaced persons in Port-au-Prince, leading to the establishment of regular sanitation services and a functional permanent community health post. For the camps, activities include community clean-up campaigns, waste management, and strengthening WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) infrastructure;

3 - The deployment of mobile clinics to provide direct access to healthcare for incarcerated individuals, ensuring that detainees receive consultations and regular screening (tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs/HIV), scabies, etc...) and the distribution of essential medications;

4 - Strengthening hygiene and infection control standards in departmental hospitals to ensure their facilities are disinfected and sanitized according to prevention standards. Interventions will focus on decontaminating critical areas (delivery rooms, operating theaters) and the safe disposal of biomedical waste.
