Haiti - 222nd Independence Day : Message from the Federal Republic of Nigeria

"On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Transitional Presidential Council, the Government, and the brotherly people of the Republic of Haiti as they celebrate their 222nd Independence Anniversary today.

January 1, 1804, remains a beacon of liberty not only for Haiti but for the entire Black world. By shattering the chains of slavery and colonialism to become the world’s first independent Black republic, Haiti blazed a trail for self-determination that inspired, decades later, independence movements across the African continent.

Nigeria recognizes the extraordinary resilience of the Haitian people. Despite historical and contemporary challenges, your courage in the face of adversity continues to be a source of admiration. We stand in firm solidarity with Haiti in its current efforts to restore security, stabilize its democratic institutions, and build a future of prosperity for all its citizens.

In this pivotal year of 2026, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to deepening the diplomatic, cultural, and fraternal ties that bind us. Our two nations share a history of resistance and a common vision of a world where human dignity is absolute.

We offer our prayers for peace and progress in Haiti. May the spirit of the ancestors of 1804 continue to guide the nation toward unity and rebirth.

Long live the Republic of Haiti! Long live the cooperation between Nigeria and Haiti !"

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Federal Republic of Nigeria
