Haiti - Politic : Caribbean countries call on the EU to strengthen its support for Haiti

During the first plenary session of the Caribbean-EU Parliamentary Assembly (February 16-18, 2026) in Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, spearheaded a regional initiative to increase European Union support for Haiti.

He stated that Caribbean countries should broaden their relationship with the European Union beyond mere trade and emphasized that international law is essential for small states. He called on the EU to support Haiti's stabilization, particularly through multidimensional security and the organization of free elections to strengthen democracy. "For small States, international law is not an option; it is vital," Browne added.

This support, according to the Caribbean Community member, should help ensure security and overall governance.

"The Caribbean reaffirms its commitment to legitimate, transparent, and responsible progress, led by Haitians and supported by international engagement [...] It is necessary to bring the security situation under control to end the suffering of the Haitian people and facilitate free and fair elections. At this stage, democratic institutions of government must be fully restored," he stated, emphasizing that the problems cannot be addressed in isolation "they must encompass multidimensional security, including food and energy security, health security, and protection against transnational crime."
