Haiti - Technology : Micro hydro power plant in the region of Labrousse
The Québec government, Hydro-Quebec [State corporation] et Collaboration St.-Jean-sur-Richelieu-Haiti announce the construction of a 20 kW micro hydro power to provide basic services to the community of Labrousse (Miragoâne) in Haiti.

This project, valued at $750,000, is designed to improve the living conditions of the population in the region which is currently not connected to Haiti's electric grid (EDH). The electrification of the area will allow health, education and agriculture projects to achieve their development objectives more easily and, the maintaining of the population in this zone, promoting the decentralization process in the heart of the reconstruction of Haiti.

"Hydro-Québec is present in Haiti for several years and is pleased to continue its commitment to the citizens by making its expertise in hydropower development, a source of clean energy, reliable, renewable, at the disposal of the electrification project in the zone of ​​Labrousse," explained Rémi Dubois, the Director Orientations and governance to Hydro-Quebec.

The State corporation was involved in the project design and continue to contribute as a consultant and by providing the aterial and equipment necessary for its implementation. It will also invest a sum of $200,000. Note that the Center for Corporate Training and Recovery (CFER) Normand-Maurice of Victoriaville, will also provide electrical equipment to be used in the construction of the grid.

"With the introduction of renewable energy sources, the project of Labrousse is a positive response to the fight against climate change to halt deforestation and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced by the generator used and the use of firewood," stressed the president of CSJSR-H, André Gamache.

The technical feasibility studies and of analysis of social and environmental impacts were realized in 2011, the construction of the project will begin in 2012 and extend over a period of just over a year.
