Did you know that the practice of tithing is a major economic and spiritual pillar for Protestant and evangelical churches in Haiti. Based on biblical references, it consists of the faithful devoting a fixed portion of their earnings to the functioning of their religious community.
This financial contribution allows churches to be autonomous, to construct buildings, pay pastors and finance social programs such as schools or food banks.
For the practitioner, tithing is an act of faith and obedience to God, often linked to the hope of receiving divine blessings in return. In a context where the State is sometimes little present, tithing allows the church to play a role as a social safety net for its members.
Understanding this mechanism helps explain the financial and logistical power of the Protestant movement in Haiti, capable of mobilizing significant resources for its spiritual and social missions.
