Haiti - Social : Michaëlle Jean met with the Minister Yanick Mézil

Monday, Michaëlle Jean, the UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, met for nearly an hour, Yanick Mézil, the Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights. Following this meeting Yanick Mézil told the press "...we handed to Michaelle Jean some documents on projects, informations on some projects we have at the ministry level, we talked about empowerment, forum, education, training of women..." declared Yanick Mézil.

For its part Michaëlle Jean stated that "...what comes out of the situation [...] is the total dependence on international aid and assistantships. It is clear that it is necessary that a sustainable economy is built and I believe that women, the Haitian women have this experience, that's what we discussed.

You know, this is not necessarily money that does all [...] UNESCO is undergoing a difficult crisis that said, for UNESCO Haiti is a priority area for action, there is no question to back on that, capacity building, improve the socio-economic status of women, allow the Ministry to achieve its objectives that it wants to achieve, to have reinforcements, to take advantage of networking with this new unit of gender, that created the Director General of UNESCO. See concretely how we can support this ministry, so that it can achieve its objectives, that's very clear [...]"
