Monitoring of projects funded by the BRH for Research and Development in Haiti

The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) reports on the progress of the projects in the 3rd cohort it is currently funding through the BRH Research and Development Fund (FRD-BRH). It notes that a total of 7 projects are involved, representing a total investment of over 66 million gourdes (66,029,374) in areas such as agriculture, the environment, health, and technological innovation.

Project Details :

1. Evaluation of Medical Waste Management Methods in Haiti : This project is part of a One Health approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of such management with human, environmental, and animal health. With a planned duration of 12 months, it is being led by a group of researchers (individuals). The project has one disbursement made on the start date of September 23, 2025. The disbursement percentage is 30%, and the current completion rate is 30%.

2. Transformation of Plastic Waste into Interlocking Paving Stones : This project, carried out by the firm VALPLAST, involves collecting plastic waste in the municipality of Cité Soleil and transforming it into paving stones suitable for the construction of roads, parking lots, driveways, gardens, etc. Its duration is 12 months. It includes one disbursement initiated on September 23, 2025. To date, the disbursement percentage is 35%, with a completion rate of 40%.

3. Production of a Haitian Natural Biopesticide : This project aims to develop a biopesticide capable of controlling coconut pests (scale insects) and aflatoxin-producing fungi on cereals (maize, rice, and sorghum) as well as oilseeds (peanuts and beans/peas). Planned for a duration of 18 months by a group of researchers (individuals), it began on September 23, 2025, with one disbursement. The disbursement rate is 35%, and the implementation level is 40%.

4. Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants of Haiti : Led by the State University of Haiti (UEH, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy), this project aims to treat infectious diseases prevalent in the country, such as urinary tract infections, tuberculosis, and malaria. It is the longest project, with a duration of 30 months. Started on September 23, 2025, with one disbursement, the disbursement rate is 35%, with a 35% implementation rate.

5. Integrated Waste Management for a Sustainable Future in Haiti : This project focuses on developing a smart waste bin and analyzing the associated economic opportunities. With a duration of 12 months and awarded to a group of researchers (individuals), it began on September 23, 2025, with one disbursement. The disbursement rate is 35%, while its implementation is particularly advanced at 75%.

6. Application of Artificial Intelligence to Revolutionize Agriculture : This project involves developing a technology to monitor, self-detect, and predict diseases, soil fertility, heat stress, and water stress due to climate change in bean, maize, and rice crops. Lasting 24 months, it is being conducted by a group of researchers (individuals). With a start date set for September 23, 2025, and one disbursement, the disbursement percentage stands at 35% and the implementation rate at 30%.

7. Science Café in Haitian Schools (CAFECLIMAT) : This project implements conferences and provides information in schools to combat climate change by generating new attitudes and behaviors. With a shorter duration of 8 months, it is managed by Quisqueya University. The project started on September 23, 2025, with one disbursement. The disbursement percentage is 35%, and the implementation rate has already reached 70%.
