Official launch in Haiti of the rehabilitation works on the RD205

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Joseph Almathe Pierre Louis, the Minister of Public Works, officially launched the rehabilitation work on the section of departmental road RD205 linking the city of Les Cayes to the commune of Torbeck, in the presence of the Minister of Tourism, the Minister of Agriculture, and local authorities from Les Cayes and Torbeck.

This long-awaited event marks a decisive step in the modernization of road infrastructure and the improvement of urban mobility in the Greater South. RD205 is a major strategic corridor that connects numerous towns, including : Les Cayes, Torbeck, Chantal, Arniquet, Saint-Jean-du-Sud, Port-Salut, Coteaux, Chardonnières, Roche-à-Bateau, Port-à-Piment, Les Anglais, and Les Irois.

Faced with the advanced state of disrepair of the existing road, which generates suffocating dust and causes daily disruption for road users, transporters, and agricultural producers, government intervention was urgently needed to open up the region. In line with this same focus on connectivity, the Ministry announced that the rehabilitation of the RD205 road as far as Port-Salut is already under study.

Funded with support from the World Bank, the project was specifically designed to overcome the hydrogeological constraints of this wetland. The technical teams opted for the construction of a hydraulic concrete roadway, a durable and resilient solution given the area's climatic conditions. The modern infrastructure will include two 3.5-meter-wide lanes, shoulders ranging from 1 to 1.5 meters in width, and a longitudinal drainage system reinforced by hydraulic crossing structures to optimize water runoff.

The work will begin this week and is expected to last ten months. Aware of the temporary disruptions this construction will cause, the Ministry requests the public's understanding and the support of the Haitian National Police (PNH) to secure the site and facilitate traffic management.
