FLASH : Pope Leo XIV warns of the risks of Artificial Intelligence

On Monday, May 25, 2026, in his first encyclical of his pontificate, Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity), subtitled "ON SAFEGUARDING THE HUMAN PERSON

IN THE TIME OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE" published today, the American Pope Leo XIV warns of the risks of AI.

Magnifica Humanitas culminates several years of reflection by the Church on technologies related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is worth recalling that as early as 2020, the Holy See, together with digital companies and academic institutions, launched the "Rome Appeal for an Ethics of AI," advocating for the development of technologies that respect human dignity.

Today, in his 82-page, 245-paragraph encyclical, Pope Leo XIV warns of the risks of Artificial Intelligence.

The key points of his risk analysis include :

The threat to employment and the economy : He fears a rapid contraction of jobs and warns against a tech giant business model that prioritizes profit over human dignity.

Military ethics : He strongly opposes "killer robots" (such as autonomous armed drones) and insists that lethal force must remain under direct human control.

The sanctity of humanity : The Pope reminds us that "the face and the voice are sacred." He warns against the dangers of generative AI, which mimics relationships and emotions, potentially blurring the lines between reality and simulation.

The environmental impact: He denounces the ecological devastation caused by the frantic race for rare earth elements and minerals needed for modern electronics.

The Vulnerability of the Youngest : The Vatican calls for enhanced protection for minors against manipulation, violent online content, and exploitation. To address these challenges, the Vatican advocates for genuine "digital literacy" and the development of critical thinking skills.
