MSF : Forced to Close its Maternity Ward in Cité Soleil Again On Friday, August 7, the international NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was once again forced to suspend its activities at the Isaïe Jeanty Maternity Ward in Chancerelles, in the Cité Soleil community, following renewed violent clashes between various armed groups in the area. This is the second suspension in less than two months. Medical activities had just resumed (end of July https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-48110-haiti-msf-resumption-of-activities-at-the-isaie-jeanty-maternity-hospital.html) after an interruption of more than three weeks. In less than 24 hours, the MSF hospitals in Cité Soleil and Tabarre received 27 patients with gunshot wounds, forcing the teams to activate their emergency response plan in case of a mass casualty incident. Teams are working tirelessly to treat the wounded as fighting continues. MSF urges all parties to respect health centers and guarantee safe access to care for the population. PNH Permanent Base in Varreux On Friday, August 7, 2026, the Haitian National Police (PNH) reinforced its presence in Cité Soleil with the establishment of a permanent base in Varreux. Inaugurated by Vladimir Paraison, Acting Director General of the institution, this new base is intended to improve coordination of police operations against gangs in this strategic area at the northern entrance to Port-au-Prince. It will also facilitate interventions and secure the passage of tanker trucks leaving the Varreux oil terminal. PNH Arrests One of the Murderers of the Gaspard Sisters The Haitian National Police (PNH) has arrested three suspects in connection with the investigation into the murders of sisters Valentina and Velenda Gaspard, who were shot dead in their home on the night of December 6-7, 2025, in Camp-Perrin. Alexandre Mackenson, alias "Shadrac," who had been on the run in the Nippes department, confessed to the crime during his interrogation and provided information that allowed the police to identify and locate his accomplices in the two murders. Following these revelations, several agents from the Departmental Judicial Police Service (SDPJ) and the Departmental Unit for Maintaining Order (UDMO) arrested Jameson Eloi, alias "11" in the Tibi area (Camp-Perrin commune). Law enforcement also arrested Auguste Melou, a security guard at the Immaculate Conception Hospital in Les Cayes, in connection with this case. The Haitian National Police (PNH) is actively searching for a fourth suspect identified as "Patchouko". Champ de Mars and Security On Thursday, August 6, 2026, as part of a series of working sessions aimed at consolidating security gains in the Champ de Mars area, Vladimir Paraison, Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH), received Marie Élisabeth Régine Joseph Haddad, Secretary General of the National Palace, accompanied by her advisor, Pierre Louis Naud, at his office. Discussions focused on strengthening security measures in downtown Port-au-Prince, particularly around the National Palace, as well as the necessary steps for the full operationalization of the administrative complex. Paraison in the streets for 3 days For the third consecutive day, Vladimir Paraison, the acting Commander-in-Chief of the Haitian National Police (PNH), continues to be present in the field to supervise and reinforce security operations in several strategic areas of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan region. During these patrols, law enforcement officers are conducting checks, searches, and verifications on various roads. Officers are checking vehicles and motorcycles, verifying the identity of individuals, inspecting vehicle documents, and checking permits for the use of sirens and tinted windows.
