In the midst of hurricane season, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) is increasing its interventions in the South to reduce the risks faced by rural communities. In the 4th communal section of Péan, in Torbeck, the Ministry, through the Resilient Agriculture for Food Security Project (PARSA), funded by the World Bank, is carrying out protection work on approximately 750 linear meters of the Ravine Sèche riverbank. This work aims to strengthen the protection of the population and preserve agricultural land from the effects of heavy rains and river flooding.

A significant portion of the project is already complete. Of the 750 linear meters planned, more than 600 linear meters of gabions have already been installed. This work primarily involves reinforcing the riverbanks to limit erosion and reduce the risk of damage to the land and surrounding infrastructure.

Speaking during his site visit, Minister of Agriculture Marcelin Aubourg emphasized the importance of the project, stating that it addresses a genuine concern of the people of Péan. He also highlighted the agricultural potential of the area, particularly that of the Leblanc farm, which he considers a prime agricultural site. He expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the work and commended the efforts of the company responsible for its execution, before assuring them that the completed structures will help mitigate the effects of severe weather on the community.

Aware of the risks posed by the ravine to the area, the Minister urged the population to be vigilant and to protect the completed structures by ensuring that the stones used for the gabion walls are not removed or moved by malicious individuals.

For the families living near Ravine Sèche, the progress of the work is being met with relief and hope. Long exposed to flooding and erosion, these communities see riverbank protection as a response to a threat that regularly impacts their agricultural activities and livelihoods.

In addition to the sense of security these structures provide, the work also offers direct economic benefits to the community, as many residents have been able to find employment and earn income through their participation in the construction activities.
