Drinking water in Haiti contaminated with lead at alarming levels
Lead contamination of drinking water in Haiti is a growing concern for the government due to its environmental and health consequences. The estimated average lead concentration in Haitian water reaches 65 micrograms per liter (µg/l). Peaks of 90 µg/l have been measured, far exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) standard of 10 µg/l.
According to expert researcher Henry Robert Duclair (Quisqueya University), the causes are varied : Infrastructure : Water networks sometimes use lead-based pipes, according to analyses by Haiti Climat; Poor management: Septic tanks, wastewater, landfills, and fertilizers pollute groundwater. Lack of Laws : The country lacks strict regulatory frameworks to control water quality.
The Ministry of Health must be vigilant regarding this lead contamination, as lead poisoning contributes to hypertension and cardiovascular problems and can cause kidney damage and serious neurotoxicity.
Haiti does not have a specific and binding national regulatory framework, nor a mechanism for monitoring the quality of groundwater intended for consumption. The water consumed in Haiti, particularly in Port-au-Prince, has very alarming levels of lead contamination.
