Of judicial source, the investigating judge Jean Carvès in charge of the case of former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, in his release today to the public prosecutor of Port au Prince, of his closing order, recommended the referral of Jean Claude Duvalier before a criminal court (correctional). Suspected of having embezzled during his reign [1971-1986], 300 to 800 million dollars, the judge Carvès request that he be tried for embezzlement of public funds but not for violations of human rights. Reacting to this decision, Me Frizto Canton, a lawyer of "Baby Doc" indeicated "we will appeal this decision because Mr. Duvalier has already been tried three times for embezzlement in Haiti, France and Switzerland" noting that embezzlement charges against his client were tried at the request of the Haitian State and that "he can not be retried for the same acts, which are prescribed."
