"Did you know that it was Jean-Pierre Boyer, who succeeded Pétion in 1818, who managed, in 1820, to reunify the North and South of Haiti after the suicide of King Henri Christophe ?

His 25-year term is one of the longest in the country's history. In 1822, he also took control of the eastern part of the island (present-day Dominican Republic), thus unifying the entire island of Hispaniola under the Haitian flag for two decades.

It was also during his presidency, in 1825, that Haiti signed the Ordinance of Charles X, agreeing to pay a heavy indemnity to France in exchange for the official recognition of its independence. This "independence debt" severely hampered the country's economic development for generations to come.

Despite the relative stability of his regime, the management of this debt and his authoritarianism ultimately led to the 1843 revolution, which resulted in his exile. Boyer remains a complex figure who consolidated territorial unity at the cost of colossal financial sacrifices."
