Unrequited remittances from the diaspora represent approximately 16% of Haiti’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). They support household spending and constitute a significant source of foreign exchange for the country.

As part of the "Reflection Wednesdays" series organized by the IDB, a study conducted by Kensley Blaise, Jean Marie Cayemitte, and Jean Gardy Victor of the Department of Economic and Financial Research (DREF) was presented.

The researchers examined the potential effects of a significant and unexpected decline in these remittances. According to the study, approximately 80% of the remittances received by Haiti originate from the United States. Changes to the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) could alter the situation of some migrants living and working there.

The findings indicate that such a decline could exert gradual pressure on the exchange rate. The impact on public finances is the most well-established and persistent, but this does not necessarily mean that remittances will automatically decrease.
