Haiti - FLASH : Yellow Alert for 5 departments

Heavy rains and thunderstorms : The National Disaster Risk Management System (SNGRD) has issued a yellow alert for 5 departments in the country.

A low-pressure system located toward the central and northwestern Caribbean Sea is bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to the Grand'Anse, South, Nippes, South-East, and West departments.

The effects of this severe weather are expected to begin this afternoon and continue through Friday, October 23.

These downpours, which could reach between 50 and 100 millimeters, accompanied by strong winds, may trigger flooding and landslides in high-risk areas.

Haiti’s Hydrometeorological Unit (UHM), the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), and the Permanent Secretariat for Disaster Risk Management (SPGRD) have issued a YELLOW ALERT for heavy rains.

The public—especially those living in vulnerable, high-risk areas—is urged to remain vigilant and follow these safety guidelines:

▪️ Stay informed by checking weather reports and directives from the authorities and Civil Protection. Do not pay attention to rumors;

▪️ Regularly listen to the radio, watch television, and follow official statements to stay updated on how the situation is evolving;

▪️ Move your belongings and important documents to a safe place, protected from potential flooding;

▪️ Prepare a several-day supply of essentials, including non-perishable food, drinking water, batteries, a radio, a flashlight, and medication, in case you are unable to leave your home.

▪️ Avoid traveling to mountainous areas or near waterways during periods of rainfall.
