The First Lady of Haiti, Sophia Martelly, opened, this Thursday, March 15, 2012, the First Regional Conference of Women of the Great North, which runs from March 15 to 17, 2012, at Versailles, in the city of Cap, around the theme : "Fanm se poto mitan pou devlopman Gran Nò a" (The woman, pillar of development of North).

Organized by the Ministry for Women and Women's Rights (MCFDF), under the sponsorship of USAID/OTI, and involving more than one hundred representatives of organizations of women, came from various parts of North and Northeast, such as Trou-du-Nord, Caracol, Terrier Rouge, Limbe, Fort-Liberté, Limonade, Ouanaminthe, Quartier Morin, this three-day conference opens a dialogue on the conditions of Haitian women, their rights, their role, their responsibilities and their contribution to the development of the region.

Sophia Martelly, who espoused the cause of Haitian women, sees in this event an opportunity for women in the North, to reflect on some major daily problems that hamper their movement. While asking them to get in association for greater voice and benefit from the change advocated by the Head of State, the First Lady wishes the reduction of barriers socio-political and economic that thse women have always faced.

Emphasizing on the integration of women in the different spheres of social life, economic and political of Haiti, Ms. Martelly believes that the development of North should not be done under the sign of exclusion. Any form of discrimination and violence against their person is according to her, against the vision of President of the Republic, of a Haiti modern, civilizedwhere reign the rule of law, justice for all and the respect for individual freedoms and rights of women.

The Office of the First Lady believes that the training of women contributes greatly to the enhancement of the family. Thatis why it continues to work to their influence, by encouraging all initiatives aiming at strengthening of their struggle. Recall that large projects are underway in the region, such as the airport of Cap-Haitien, the University of Limonade and the Industrial Park Caracol.
