Haiti - Travel : Saturday, inaugural flight Atlanta / Port-au-Prince
Saturday, April 7, 2012, the airline company Delta Airlines will launch its first direct flight to Haiti. This route will be ensured every Saturday, by a Boeing 737-800. The inauguration ceremony will take place at Hartsfield-Jackson airport of Atlanta this Saturday at the gate E12. The boarding is scheduled for 10:30 am.

The Delta flight 685 will depart Atlanta airport at 11:15 am and arrive in Port-au-Prince at 2:21 pm The flight 684 will leave Port-au-Prince at 3:25 pm to arrive at 6:49pm in Atlanta.

"...our expectation is to have the flights filled almost year round, is to have a constant activity, a support from the entire Haitian community based in the U.S. and Haitians from here, is to have the cooperation from the Haitian businesses for the corporate travel, and generally, to position ourselves in the market as an alternative in the travel industry in Haiti. The flight to Atlanta, we can say that this is a pilot project, depending on the results, the HQ of Delta in Atlanta, will decide whether or not, depending on demand, according to the results obtained, we will increase the flight frequency. There is a good chance that this happen, but we need the support of the market, we need the support of customers in order to increase our capacity," declared Cédric Chauvet, Delta Airlines Representative in Haiti, announcing at the same time that the flight in New York will become daily from June 7, 2012."

"Thanks to Atlanta's central location in the Southeast, the new Saturday flight is to draw connecting passengers from all over the country and the growing number of businesspeople and aid workers traveling to Haiti from the region," declared Trebor Banstetter, Delta spokesman. Much of the current U.S.-Haiti air traffic goes through Miami, where American Airlines operates a Latin America hub. "That means much of the rest of the country is not particularly well-served [...] It'll be a convenient connecting point."

Last Tuesday, during an inauguration cocktail of its weekly flight, Port-au-Prince/Atlanta, Philippe Armand, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Haiti (AMCHAM) stated "This will strengthen the process of internationalization of investment in Haiti," for Pierre Chauvet, president of the Tourism Association of Haiti (ATH) "The plane seats generate rental cars, hotel beds occupied and restaurant tables reserved [...] the development of tourism also passes by that [...]"

The passengers of this new flight of Delta Airlines, Port-au-Prince - Atlanta will have access, on 7 April 2012, to over 1,000 connections via the airline, because the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, in Atlanta, is one of the busiest airports in the world. This new flight is in addition to the company's daily flight from New York/JFK.

"Georgia is home to an estimated 50,000 people of Haitian descent," declared Gandy Thomas, Haiti's consul general in Atlanta.

Delta Air Lines has no competition on this route, contrary to that operated daily from New York/JFK where it faces competition from American Airlines (more (United Airlines from Newark). Another American company serves Haiti, Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale.

Air France and Air Caraïbes are also present in Port au Prince, as well as Air Canada, Air Transat and Sunwing Airlines for connections with Canada, and Aero Caribbean, Copa Airlines or Insel Air for regional roads.
