Haiti - FLASH : Second drama to Morne Tapion (UPDATE 8h30am)
Second tragic accident of traffic in the space of 4 days, to Morne Tapion, (near Grand-Goâve), this Saturday, April 7, 2012 around 4h30 pm. This time it's a truck coming from Port-au-Prince that carried merchants and goods that has spilled at the summit of Morne Tapion.

Saturday, at 7h41 pm, according to the latest information, the partial assessment reported 19 dead and others to the hospital of Notre-Dame of Petit-Goâve, as well as many wounded who were transported to the hospital of Petit-Goâve where the situation is desperate.

According to Joël Charles, the hospital administrator about 40 injured, whose some very serious (head trauma and numerous fractures) are arrived at the Hospital, transported by the Red Cross.

The Hospital is not able to provide first aid to the wounded (at least 3 have passed away in hospital).

Petit-Goâve needs emergency assistance, the hospital is overwhelmed...

A SOS is sent to Port-au-Prince for assistance in emergency.

According to first reports, the truck had mechanical problems, some passengers have by prudence, left the truck on the way, others are remained on it. The driver continued despite everything his route towards Les Cayes and Morme à Tapion, when the brakes whould have stopped to work and the truck overturned.

The record now stands at 19 deaths (17 women and two men) whose 17 have died at the scene of the accident and two others passed away in hospital. The number of injured is currently estimated at 40. The worst affected were transported to other hospitals in the country by ambulances of the Haitian Red Cross.

The impossibility of provide emergency care at the hospital Notre-Dame of Petit-Goâve is not due to the Easter celebrations. The hospital is indeed dysfunctional for years and lack of almost everything, of materials and doctors... Even first aid could not be provided to wounded fault of materials and supplies necessary.

The population threatens to demonstrate in the coming days to come to force the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) to assume its responsibilities.

The toll rises : 21 dead and 42 wounded.

Update Sunday, April 8 8h30am
According to several sources, the truck overturned was carrying in addition of goods, more than 65 passengers at the time of the accident. According to available information, there are 27 victims and 36 wounded. 17 people lost their lives on the scene of the accident and 10 have passed away in hospital or during transport by the Haitian Red Cross. Some wounded people treated currently in hospital are still in critical condition and the death toll could rise in the coming hours.
