Haiti - Telecommunication : Dismantling of a network diverting international calls
Yesterday Wednesday, during a press conference held at the police station of Port-au-Prince, the lawyer of the National Council of Telecommunications, Me Jean Pierre Larrio, explained that the unit of fight against phone fraud has dismantled a network of swindlers who diverted the international calls to Haiti. Following a complaint filed by the company Voilà, the the structure of the fight against piracy has conducted a joint operation with the National Police of Haiti, at Delmas 18 and Carrefour Paillant.

"The National Police arrested Jean Claude Cherry, an employee of the network and preceded with the seizure of a lot of computer and technological equipment used by the pirate to divert calls," has declared Me Jean Pierre Larrio. The cost of such equipment would be about 60 to 70,000 U.S. dollars. The lawyer also said that the Haitian government has come to identify this association with the support of experts from the three mobile operators.

"Because of this group, the Haitian government and the Mobile phone companies have serious financial losses. Meanwhile, we follow other paths that can lead us to the arrest of others involved in these fraudulent activities," declared Pierre.

"The accused in this case, Cherry Jean Claude is currently in the hands of judicial authorities" informed the lawyer. In the coming hours, it will be referred to the Cabinet of instruction for legal suites.

CONATEL requires homeowners to be vigilant in order not to contract with swindlers under penalty to have to answer to the questions of justice.

The General Directorate of the National Telecommunications Council, CONATEL, reiterates its determination to work to strengthen the telecommunications sector in Haiti.
