Haiti - Culture : Haitian artists at the 11th Biennale of Havana
More than 112 artists from 45 countries will participate this year to the official activities of the 11th Biennale of Havana, which runs from May 11 to June 11, 2012 in more than a hundred public spaces of the Cuban capital, have announced the organizers. In parallel to official events of the Biennale hundreds of other artists will gather in the streets of Havana for the festival of painting and sculpture, photographs, films, montages and various performances.

The International Biennial which takes place every two years in Havana wants to be a showcase cultural of the contemporary art works and artists from different countries. This important event was conceived and designed by Fidel Castro, recalled its director Jorge Fernandez, stressing that "the utopia of art is not dead and will not die."

Barbara Stephenson, Head of the Support Programme to the Strengthening of Culture and Art for the Economic and Social Development (ARCADES) of the European Development Fund, and member of the the Haitian committee, announced last Friday that a delegation of Haitian artists will be present in Havana from May 28 to June 4. The committee, responsible for facilitating the participation of Haiti in this cultural event is also composed of Barbara Stephenson, of Jude Piquant, Member of Cabinet of Foreign Minister, Isabel Castaneda, head of Cultural Affairs of the Embassy of Cuba in Haiti, and Philippe Dodard, Director of the National School of the Arts (ENARTS) "make discover to the Cuban public and visitors through the Haitian creation through one week of exposure, meet the artists," is the objective of the Haitian delegation, indicated Barbara Stephenson, who stressed that the participation of Haitian artists, was made possible through the financial support of 30.000 euros, of the European Development Fund.

Maksaens Denis will be the guest of honor to the pavilion of Haiti, [artist formally invited by the 11th Biennial]. Denis was born July 27, 1968 in Port-au-Prince and lives and works in Dakar, Senegal. Graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle of Paris, he has made several films from 1998 to 2004, whose in 2002 "E Pluribus Unum", a story about two Haitian sculptors in the slums of Port-au-Prince, who won the Best Art Film at the Berlin Black Film Festival in 2004. Maksaens will present during this biennial, two art events in parallel : an exhibition that will showcase the works of artist Denis Dubréus Lhérisson (born April 14, 1971 in Cap Haitien) and those of the artist David Boyer (born in Bel Air January 6, 1977) ; and a Haitian week from 28 May to 4 June 2012, called "Ayiti a la Casa".
