Haiti - Environment : The President Martelly will represent Haiti at the Rio+20 Conference
The Office of Communication of the Presidency informs us that the President Michel Martelly, will participate of 19 to 24 June 2012, to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) in Brazil. The Head of State will take the opportunity to participate in several bilateral meetings during which he will discuss with our international partners of issues related to development in Haiti and the efforts undertaken to make more livable Planet Earth.

Regardless of their level of wealth, countries are facing severe economic and financial crises, the social inequality, hunger, unemployment, loss of biodiversity and climate change. These multiple crises underscore the timeliness and urgency of the implementation of sustainable development models, that is to say national projects that consider, in a balanced and integrated way, the economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Rio +20 Conference will provide an opportunity to bring this debate at the highest level.

The Rio +20 program is organized around two broad themes. The first is the green economy in the context of sustainable development and of the poverty eradication. About this theme, there is general agreement among countries on certain aspects: there is no single model of green economy, and it is impossible to understand the green economy without associating it with the eradication of poverty, that is to say, the objectives of social inclusion.

In the first theme, ech country will formulate its own conception of green economy, according to its national situation, the available resources and its development challenges. The adoption of unique models of green economy for all countries could cause distortions, such as the creation of trade barriers, which would increase the disparities between countries, worsening social problems, particularly in developing countries.

The second theme is governance for sustainable development. In other words, this is to adapt the structures of the UN system to strengthen multilateralism, reduce the democratic deficit and organize a better integration between the social, economic and environmental dimension of sustainable development.

Rio +20 could make a contribution decisively, facing the global warming, because sustainable development is the best response to the challenges associated with climate change.

The world is watching to Brazil, that host Rio +20, hoping that it will exercise its leadership.
