The Government of the Republic of Haiti condemns the impeachment of President Fernando Lugo pronounced by the Parliament of the Republic of Paraguay, at 9 months of the presidential elections, during a summary trial that violated the rights of defense.

This act constitutes a threat for the democratic regimes of the region.

The Government of the Republic of Haiti reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and values contained in the Declaration of Quebec of April 2001 and in the Inter-American Democratic Charter of 11 September 2001 to which have subscribed the States of America. It calls for respect of the popular will and supports any initiative aimed at restoring democratic order in Paraguay.

Instructions have been passed to the Permanent Representative of Haiti to the Organization of American States, for the adoption of appropriate measures in consultation with the other conutries of the region, for the return in its duties of the legitimate President, Fernando Lugo.
