Haiti - Social : Nurses in Quebec and Haiti, unite for the valuation of nursing work
Régine Laurent, President of the Federation Interprofessional of the Health of Quebec (FIQ) and Rose-Bello Bernard Spokesperson of the Union of Nursing staff (SPI) of Haiti have recently met the Ambassador of Haiti in Canada, Frantz Liautaud, the meeting was to interpellate the Government of Haiti to ratify without delay the Convention 149 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) which aims in particular, the restructuring of the Haitian health system by recognizing the protection and improvement of the health of the Haitian population and the improvement of working conditions of nurses. Conditions of practice of nurse in Haiti are very difficult, particularly in rural areas where the nurse is often the only health professional to provide the necessary care to the population.

Professional recognition of nurses in Haiti is an issue as important for nurses in Quebec that historically have led important battles for its recognition. "In this year of 5th Anniversary of the FIQ it is with pride that we express our solidarity with our sisters in Haiti so that they of employment conditions and of exercise who can afford to provide quality health care to the whole of the Haitian people," stressed Régine Laurent "The struggles past and future are fingerprints of values ​​held by the FIQ that seek first and foremost to ensure the valuation of care professionals and the sustainability of public health system."

Thus, in conjunction with the SPI, the FIQ reiterates the crucial role of the nurse in its contribution for a better accessibility of health care offered to the population by favoring community care within local communities.

For Rose-Bello Bernard of SPI, the ratification of the Convention 149 by the Haitian Parliament, represents an important lever to allow nurses of Haiti to help improve health conditions in Haiti. "In a context of reconstruction where the strengthening of the health system, is of utmost importance for the country's futurethe support the FIQ is much appreciated."

FIQ and SPI were very satisfied with the discussions held during this meeting and are hopeful that the support of Ambassador Liautaud, to the nurses of Haiti, will help to advance their claims.
