Haiti - Agriculture : An aquaponics farm in Grace Village 09/09/2012 10:24:20 In collaboration with Healing Haiti, a nonprofit charitable organization, Waterlife Design Group team member Joshua Burger successfully installed the system, composed of four 1,000 gallon fish culture tanks, ten 88’ x 4’ lined plant beds and all the necessary filtration equipment for recirculating aquaponics. The system is capable of producing approximately 2,500 lbs of fish per year, and between 6,000 and 8,000 plants will be able to grow in the plant beds at the same time. The fast-growing technology of aquaponics was chosen as the method for this particular project because it can be used successfully in nearly any conditions. The goal of Healing Haiti is to have aquaponic farms to increase vegetable and fish farming, and provide organic food rich in protein, to the local community. About Waterlife Design Group Inc. : Waterlife Design Group is a division of Aquatic Habitats Inc. established to meet the increasing demands of the aquaculture. Facilities around the world have benefited from Waterlife's design, engineering and consulting expertise. About Healing Haiti : Healing Haiti is an NGO serving the most vulnerable populations, which focuses on the provision of water, food, housing and education. Learn more about the aquaponics culture : Aquaponics consists in the cultivation of plants in symbiosis with fish farming. It is an ecosystem in which intervene three types of organisms : fish whose droppings are a source of nutrients for the plants as fertilizer. Aerobic bacteria that convert nitrate wastes assimilated by plants in mineral form and cultivated plants that purify the water. HL/ HaitiLibre
