Thursday in New York, the President Martelly met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together in support of Haitian priorities for security, governance, rule of law, economic and sustainable development priorities.

They discussed progress made to strengthen governance and institutions in Haiti, and to lay the groundwork for long-term economic stability. The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the upcoming Francophonie Summit, which will take place October 12-14 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Canada remains the second largest donor in Haiti, and its assistance is showing concrete results, including daily hot meals for 400,000 schoolchildren; increased immunization coverage rates for measles and rubella; and the registration of 4.8 million Haitian citizens in the National Civil Registry [giving them access to employment, banking, government services, and voting].
