Haiti - Social : Notice of extension of TPS was released Monday

The Department of Homeland Security - DHS published in the "Federal Register" /Vol. 77, No. 190 /Monday, October 1, 2012 /Notices 59943, the notice that extends for 18 months from January 23, 2013 through July 22, 2014 the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians living in the United States.

he extension allows currently eligible TPS beneficiaries to retain TPS through July 22, 2014. Janet Napolitano, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has determined that an extension is warranted because the conditions in Haiti that prompted the initial 2010 TPS designation and the 2011 redesignation continue to be met. There continue to be extraordinary and temporary conditions in Haiti resulting from the devastating effects of the January 2010 earthquake that prevent Haitians from returning to their country in safety. Permitting eligible Haitians to remain temporarily in the United States is not contrary to the national interest of the United States.

The notice also indicates that "the United States is committed to continuing to assist the people of Haiti. DHS is therefore extending this employment authorization for F–1 nonimmigrant students whose country of citizenship is Haiti and who are continuing to experience severe economic hardship as a result of the earthquake."

DHS's decision will allow about 60,000 of our fellow citizens to remain in the United States 18 months more. Haitian nationals concerned by the TPS, have 60 days to re-register from 1 October 2012.
