Haiti - Social : Precision on the events that occurred in Barette
Contrary to information circulated on several media of the capital, the population of Barette did not manifest nor against the President Martelly nor against the deputy Thimoléon, on October 4 and there was no injured by bullet.

Forvil Herold, Coordinator of the Movement for the Progress of the first Plaine of Petit-Goâve, retrace for us the course of events "The inhabitants of Barette, who had announced a demonstration for Monday, October 1st, occupied indeed that day, the National Road #2 [without blocking it]. They demanded the clearing/dredging of three rivers 'Barette', 'Benee' and 'Dlo piti'.

Agents of the Departmental Unit for the Maintenance of Order (UDMO) of Miragoâne, who were returning from Port-au-Prince, were not aware of this event. Once you arrive in Barette, they fired tear gas on protesters to disperse and have fired at breast height. But, thank God, there were no casualties or injuries. The residents protested, claiming the right to demonstrate peacefully, stressing that did not interfere with the movement of vehicles [...]

This is the action of agents of the UDMO that day, that pushed the inhabitants of Barette, angry, to block the National Road #2.

The next day, Tuesday, October 2, the population again have blocked the Nationale #2. The clearing/dredging of rivers, here's what was required.

Wednesday, October 3, Mrs Sandra Jules, the Mayor of Petit Goâve has went on site nd met with the inhabitants of Barette. She promised to meet them accompanied by the Deputy Thimoléon in the afternoon, around 5:00 pm. However, the Mayor did not meet this appointment and she does not back to Barette.

Thursday, October 4, the inhabitants exasperated have blocked for the third time the national #2, aiming to have been misled by the Mayor. That day, the protesters were unaware that the Head of State was in downtown of Petit-Goâve and that he was inaugurating the Avenue of the Hatte https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-6815-haiti-reconstruction-inauguration-of-road-infrastructure-work-in-petit-goave.html

Contrary to information circulating on several media of the capital, suggesting that the inhabitants of Barette demonstrating against President Martelly, I say no, this is wrong. They did not manifest nor against the President Martelly nor against the deputy Thimoléon, there has been confusion. No one to Barette, is opposed to the Head of State. The clearing of rivers, this is what was required.

Moreover on 7,000 people who voted for Martelly 1.500 were of Barette. The President Martelly and the deputy Thimoléon have worked too hard for us, for we demonstrate against them. The President was in town this Thursday, October 4 and the media have mistakenly believed that it was against him that we demonstrate...

UDMO agents have intervened in area in the afternoon of Thursday, to clear the road. They hit with batons residents and used tear gas. They threw a tear gas grenade that fell on the courtyard of Mrs. Facilicia Hyppolite, aged 80 years, who died following the incident. A boy named Nazaire was severely beaten as well as many passersby by of agents of the UDMO. There has never been injured by bullets."
