This Tuesday, after being warmly applauded the President Martelly spoke before hundreds of parliamentarians, in plenary session at the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France.

Intervention of President Martelly (extracts) :

"[...]I come here to tell you that despite all catastrophes Haiti is not giving up. Slowly but surely, Haiti is standing up again, and this is the good news I want to bring to this House

This change of tack is owed to the courage of our population and to the determination of our administration, but we also owe a great deal on this recovery to the active cooperation of Europe, the biggest of all cooperation [...]

My presence here today is an opportunity to thank you for your generosity and for your solidarity and to recall that no country can find its out of poverty simply by asking for charity.

[...] I am here today to introduce, and to invite you to be part in our recovery by being involved in the extraordinary potential of our investments. I invite you to work with us to regain our financial sovereignty and enable us to get back to the international financial markets.

I am here, together with you, to envision new free-trade agreements and I to work together with us to design and to draw intelligent and lucrative projects. I ask to cooperate with us to find the best means to finance them. [...]

Young people in Europe must know that the countries of the South are counting on them, that they cannot turn their backs to solidarity. Because from their generosity and intelligent choices are depending a more fraternal world, a world which is economically more moral and safer in environmental terms, and surely more democratic and more tolerant [...]

Haiti will stand again, because we have understood that the vulnerability of our territory, which is considerable, is not going to get any better in the years ahead if the announced climate change for the Caribbean islands will continue to damage our country.

We will get back on our feet because, in a stubborn way, we are working on prevention measures. And prevention means improving our territorial planning [...] My term of office will be dedicated among other things to getting our population into school, to fight against corruption, to the establishment of the rule of law. My hope and trust is that the results will come."
