Haiti - Canada : Meeting Martelly-Fantino, towards the strengthening of cooperation

Yesterday Monday, the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, met at the National Palace, with Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation of Canada, in official visit in the country. Mr. Fantino came to inquire about the impact of Canada's contribution in the raising of the standard of living of the people of Haiti.

Mr. Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation of Canada, is also deputy of the constituency of Vaughan and Police officer retired. In this sense, it pays particular attention to the issue of institutional capacity in Haiti.

During his meeting with President Martelly, Mr. Fantino has reiterated the commitment of his country, Canada, to help the Haitian people, to strengthen its cooperation with Haiti in order to help the country to deal with current challenges, following the passage, among others, of Sandy over Haiti.

"I discussed with President Martelly of mechanisms to put in place to operate concrete reforms, in order to enforce the public interest, to promote the rule of law, protect human rights and to encourage the creation of jobs," declared Minister Fantino.

The President Martelly, for his part, noted that "the interventions of the Canadian Government in favor of strengthening of capacities of Haitian institutions can only help the overall climate for an improvement of the situation in Haiti. Also, the Haitian Government thanked Canada for all the efforts made so far in the country."

In addition, the Head of State reiterated the commitment of his administration to work with Canada in order to identify the priorities for a readjustment that will allow the country to no longer use assistantship and move towards sustainable development.

Mr. Fantino will also meet during his visit, the Prime Minister Mr. Laurent Lamothe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Richard Casimir and representatives of Canadian companies in Haiti. He will also visit of development projects supported by Canada to Port-au-Prince and Léogêne. Since 2009, Haiti became one of the countries targeted by Canadian aid.
