Haiti - Technology : Remote Sensing Space Centre in Haiti
Within the framework of the bilateral cooperation France-Haiti, the Research Institute for Development (IRD) and the State University of Haiti (UEH) have signed an agreement for the establishment on the campus Roi Christophe (North), of an antenna of Environmental Monitoring Satellite Aided (SEAS).

This antenna will allow to receive images of the Caribbean region, taken from various satellites that could be used in various sectors :

  • The environment (by allowing to study deforestation, water cycle, coastal littoral) ;
  • Health by making epidemiological maps) ;
  • Management of natural hazards (through the detection of areas most vulnerable) ;
  • Spatial planning (production of a detailed mapping of Haiti).

In order to exploit these images in the better way, a Centre for Research and Training on Environmental Monitoring will be created. It will bring together research teams national, regional and international. Specific training will be offered to Haitian researchers, and regional research programs and pilot applications will be implemented. Data access will be free for the Haitian government.

The creation of this Research Centre, will also have a positive impact on the economic development of the northern region and encourage the installation of private companies, to implement of services to support the management of natural resources.
