Haiti - Social : 127 boat people intercepted off the Turks & Caicos

Sunday, the marine division of the police of the Turks & Caicos intercepted a sailing boat carrying 127 Haitian [104 men and 23 women] who were trying to enter on the British territory.

The 127 migrants were handed over to the authorities. Our compatriots were escorted by police to the island of Grand Turk, where they were received by immigration officials and volunteers of the Red Cross. They are currently detained by the authorities of the Turks & Caicos, who suspect them of trying to illegally enter on their territory.

For a long time our compatriots try these perilous voyages by boat from Haiti to the islands, to try to find work. It is estimated that 15.000 Haitians live in these islands whose 6,500 would be in an irregular situation. Turks & Caicos is one of the most common destinations of undocumented immigrants from Haiti, after the Dominican Republic.
