Haiti - Social : «We will have a lot of sacrifices to do» (dixit President Martelly)
This Tuesday 1st January 2013, New Year's Day and National Independence Day on the Place d'Armes in Gonaïves, the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly delivered a speech to the Nation, and invited the large crowd to get back into the memory of January 1, 1804, to draw of it the fundamental Unity and "to resume our march of conquest, towards this Haiti of Peace, justice and progress, that all the son of this land, would like to see emerge and impose [...]"

Speech of President Martelly : (excerpts)
"[...] in this January 1st, New Year's Day and National Independence Day, I wish all my compatriots wherever on Earth they are, a year 2013, prosperous and happy. I invite them to immerse themselves in the memory of 1 January 1804, pivotal event in our history when our forefathers created a sovereign state.

That day, feathers had replaced the bayonets, sabers and swords on the esplanade of Place d'Armes of Gonaïves, illuminated by the sun of victory, the union of hearts and minds wore our state of the font.

I wish that our country back to this communion of souls. That sublime moment in our history, has been made possible only because in those times, Haiti vibrated with a single heart. It is this fundamental unity that we must regain today, to resume our march of conquest, towards this Haiti of Peace, justice and progress, that all the son of this land, would like to see emerge and impose.

My dear compatriots, in 2013 we must tirelessly pursue the construction of the national community of social justice to which we all dream. Errors and mistakes, are no longer allowed to us, because it is a question of our survival. It is imperative, that we work to reduce the too flagrant social inequalities that prevent harmonious cohesion of our community.

Also, there is an urgent need to devote time and energy to reduce the vulnerability of our environment, which exposes us to the devastation and mourning, caused by the mood swings of nature.

It is imperative that we work to boost our agricultural production, so that we were able to reduce our dependence on food.

Our environment must be rehabilitated so that any bad weather, no longet mourns us, no longer disturbs our economy.

The year 2013 will be declared Year of the Environment.

In 2013 will be increased the interest already expressed, for education [...] the history of Peoples proves that most the members of a society rise in the level of education, the more they expand their capabilities and abilities of existence [...]

[...] the strengthening of democratic institutions, so that be established the confidence, and that we are incited, to the investment and entrepreneurship, generators of employment and wealth.

[...] That is how we will move forward, step by step, with a better trained workforce, with a rule of law guaranteeing everyone the free exercise of faculties, towards this Haiti of progress and social justice, to which we all aspire.

[...] It is necessary to avoid to let himself go to destructive impulses, which after analysis, provide only primary satisfactions and further impoverish the whole country.

Even if we do not have a magic wand capable of transforming into a sleight the profound realities sometimes cruel that we live, we must quintuple our forces to change the living conditions of the population.

That is our mandate, the mandate of the President of the Republic, it is the mandate the people gave me.

Haitian people, we have to take advantage today, to once again honor our ancestors who fought for us to leave us this country. The courage and self-sacrifice of our ancestors, allows today to have an independent state. To follow in their footsteps and continue the dream they had for us, we must continue to hold our heads high, to achieve great things, in agriculture, environment, economy, health, in education and democracy.

Let us together, to keep Haiti, beautiful, clean, attractive and pleasant. To get there, we will have a lot of sacrifices to do. In the same way that our ancestors, the duties and responsibilities of our generation, ask that we take the example on their courage and determination to remove Haiti from the darkness, poverty, illiteracy, hunger, unemployment and exclusion.

[...] We must work to see the development on the whole territory. It is this battle that we must lead today, is the battle that we must win [...]

My countrymen, political crises, economic problems and natural disasters, already give us too much late, on the path that must lead us towards the development and democracy. The day has come to unite you, to set aside your differences, to show the world that you deserve the legacy of Independence, that our ancestors have left us.

The day has come to use your strength and courage to build another country [...] a country that is respected by the other peoples of the Earth.

[...] I want to make one with all sectors of society [...] throughout the country, to make a large mobilization, so that we embark together in the machine of change. There is much work to do indeed, identify ways is not easy, you all know, but together we must do it, we can do it and together we will do it.

[...] I have already sounded the signal by sending the children to school, creating the institutions provided for in the Constitution, looking for ways to rebuild the country, and I want to remain faithful to all the values that the Independence has brought us. That is why, I will not stop my fight for justice and democracy.

We will work without stopping, so that there is order and security in the four corners of the country.

I arrange everything with the Government to do everything possible to recover the agricultural sector, to have a domestic production, allowing Haiti feeding.

It is not easy, but it is possible with all Haitians who want to work with me and the Government to put the country right up.

It is necessary to redress the country's environment, and it is together that we must do it.

[...] I would like every Haitian, make a commitment on the occasion of 1st January to plant at least one tree, as civic contribution [...]

One person one tree !

[...] In 25 years, we can say that we have a green country, like this, we will realize the dream of our ancestors [...]

My compatriots, I know that you are suffering for long ; it is your right to claim and manifest, but democracy does not mean brigandage, democracy does not mean Kraze brize, democracy does not mean destruction.

Democracy can not be built in the disorder.

[...] those who encourage the disorder and brigandage are the enemies of the people, of the country. They want the peoplealways make a step back. When there are such acts, it is the misery of the people that increases, the country back, your children back, your family back, you back. Everything that is broken must be replaced, rebuilt, but it takes time and money, making wasting time to the country, money, that could be used to lead us on the path of development.

[...] Peace is the first condition to find investments, finding work, health, education, and to provide social justice.

[...] It is the Union that allowed to lead to 1 January 1804. It is not with the disorder, that investment will come in the country, it is not in the disorder that teachers and students can work [...]

[...] The destruction is something that is easy, the construction is a difficult thing and it takes time.

It is easy to see what is not done, when there are many things that must be done [...]

[...] The amount of work I have in front of me, do not discourage me. Instead, my involvement gives me hope, that Haiti will arrive where it must go, a country covered with trees, a country that provides education to its children, work and food, a country where there is social justice for all [...]"
