Haiti - Politic : Michel Martelly, President of the CARICOM (Message)
Since 1 January 2013, for the first time since Haiti is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), [which is celebrating its 40th anniversary], Haiti assumes for the next 6 months, the rotating Presidency of the CARICOM.

On the occasion of New Year and this presidency, the President Martelly, has sent a message to the people and leaders of government, of 15 member countries of the Caribbean Community.

Message of President Martelly to the CARICOM :
"On the occasion of the new year, I want to wish to the Peoples of the Community of wishes of peace and a good and productive year 2013. This year proves to be very special for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which celebrates its 40th anniversary, as well as for my country holding the Presidency of this organization for the first time since his membership in the structure of regional integration.

The January 1, 2013 also marks the 209th anniversary of the Independence of Haiti conducted under the banner of the Union.

It is also in union, that all the Nations of the Community can overcome the serious economic, ecological, social challenges and other to which the region faces. I therefore invite all Caribbean Nations to this harmony, in order to achieve the necessary structural changes to the progress and well-being of our peoples.

For my part, in my capacity of President of the Community, I pledge resolutely. Thus, Haiti will take advantage, to ensure the leadership of integration process during the next six months with the intention to leave ad legacy a Caribbean community stronger and more dynamic. The Haitian presidency will encourageany sustainable development policy based, inter alia, on the promotion of green economy by a functional cooperation.

In doing so, I will draw on the excellent work of my predecessor, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, the Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony and on the support of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Kamla Persad -Bissessar, as a member of the Bureau of the Conference of Heads of State and Government, as well as on that of all other Heads of Government of the CARICOM.

Today, the evidence are patent : the achievements of the Community during the last forty years, are there to show that the integration is not only a bulwark against challenges, but also a means by which we can achieve greater development in this dynamic global environment and redoubtable. Is therefore, in the unification of our potential, we will be better able to respond to adversity, that threaten to overwhelm us.

As I said in my first speech at the 32nd Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in St. Kitts and Nevis in July 2011: "The real strength of the Caribbean lies in its pluralistic dimension and cultural." We must be willing to work with our development partners to create a common platform for the benefit of our Member States and their citizens.

Within this movement, I am aware that Haiti must now accelerate its insertion. This is one of the commitments that I signed during the presidency of Haiti and I want to impulse throughout my term as President of the Republic.

I wish already welcome in Haiti to my dear colleagues from the Caribbean who will come next February, to discuss the future of the Community at the XXIV Intersessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CARICOM.

Thank you !"
