Haiti - Agriculture : New Communal Fishing Center in Marigot

Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for Animal Production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Development, Jesús Gracia Aldaz, the Secretary of State for Spanish Cooperation and the Director-General for Fisheries, Health and Production animal to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, the agronomist Pierre-Guy Lafontant, have inaugurated at the beginning of the month, in Marigot, a "Communal Fishing Center", (Centre Communal de Pêche et Marine - CCPM), the second of a series of 5 centers that will benefit the Southeast.

Funded to the tune of $ 90,000 by the Spanish Cooperation, the Ministry of Agriculture supervised the construction of the center, which aims to play a role of economic engine in this sector, with its products shop or fishing inputs, treatment rooms, storage and processing, the center also has a conference room for training fishermen, it will be of great support for fishermen.

According to the agronomist engineer Wilner Romain, Project Manager, with the use of FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), which are technologies designed to attract fish, fishermen may increase their production of nearly 300%.

The management of CCPM will be ensured by the fishermen associations of Marigot regrouped in a new structure "Union of Fishermen's Associations of Marigot" (UNAPMA) stated Claude Moustafa, President of UNAPMA.
