French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, officially announced (habemus papam) that this Wednesday, March 13, 2013, shortly after 7:00 p.m., the 115 cardinal electors, have elected Pope [the 266th], the Argentinian Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio, successor of Benedict XVI, who will be named "Francis". This is the first Pope from the American continent and the first Jesuit to hold this position. Jorge Mario Bergoglio (76), Jesuit of Argentina, son of Italian immigrant parents, was born in Buenos Aires in 1936. Fervent defender of the poor, he did not hesitate to oppose the political authorities of his country, and is considered close to the movement Communion and Liberation. He had already been the challenger of Ratzinger in 2005.
After studying chemistry, he entered the seminary of Villa Devoto and in March 1958, to the novitiate of the "Compagnie de Jésus". He performs his humanities in Chile, came back in 1963 in Buenos Aires, for his studies of philosophy. He studied theology at San Miguel (1967-1970), and was ordained priest on 13 December 1969.
