Haiti - Agriculture : New hill lake 03/06/2013 10:45:16
Dr. Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for Animal Production has announced the construction of a new hill lake in the Communal section of Taïfer. This new lake is added to the 10 others already built under the National Programme of Hill Lakes (PNLC), established in 2008. On a area of 1.3 hectares, the lake can store more than 30,000 m3 of water. Funded exclusively by the Haitian Public Treasury, this work valued at 4 million Gourds will last 2 months.
"Water is life. The lakes are of multi-functional structures. They are used for agriculture, fish farming, to give drink to animals, for domestic needs," stated Wilson Celestin Technical Coordinator of PNLC "On the environmental front, the hill lakes provide habitat for terrestrial and aquatic birds and aquatic plants, which contribute to the supply of groundwater reserves, they are useful for evapotranspiration."

The Secretary of State also announced the Government's support to assist beneficiaries by establishing a management committee. The Government will provide training, materials and equipment, in order to value de lake at the level of fish stocking.
