Haiti - Education : 3 important announcements of GRAHN
This week in Port-au-Prince, before a hundred members of the Haitian university community, the Group of Reflection and Action for a New Haiti (GRAHN), announced the opening of the Institute of Science, Technology and advanced Studies of Haiti (Institut des Sciences, des Technologies et des Études avancées d'Haïti - ISTEAH), an academic institution of excellence, nonprofit.

The first programs offered by ISTEAH are in Educational Sciences with 7 disciplinary orientations based on a common core required for all. From September 2013, these programs will welcome a total of 50 students in a DESS program (Diploma of Specialized Higher Studies), Master and doctoral programs. Applications for admission are open from today and will continue until 15 August 2013. The payment of admission fees, 500 Gourdes, is done electronically on the website of the ISTEAH (www.isteah.edu.ht) or by mail to the addresses listed on the site. Only complete applications of candidates who have paid the admission fee will be considered.

Simultaneously with the opening, the GRAHN announced the creation of the Foundation ISTEAH (www.isteah.edu.ht/index.php/isteah-en-bref/fondation), designed to support the efforts of the ISTEAH in training university teachers in the scientific and technological disciplines selected. The Foundation will aim not only to contribute to the functioning of the ISTEAH and maintaining excellence in teaching and research activities, but also financially support students by awarding scholarships based on merit.

GRAHN also announced the creation of the Haitian Academy of Sciences (AHS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of science and technology in the country. Bringing together, Haitian eminent scientists, the Academy will host a permanent reflection and will maintain constant vigilance while offering recommendations on the organization of research, of research training, and of sciece education from elementary classes to the university level. The Academy will promote scientific life by scientific thinking at the heart of debates and by guiding these debates towards the application of science to the great challenges of the Haitian society. It will also ensure the influence of the Haitian science internationally by fostering collaborations and by representing Haiti within the international networks of academies and other international scientific institutions.
