Haiti - Social : Creation of a garden of medicinal plants

The project creation of the park Martissant, included among others the creation of a garden of medicinal plants. This garden for educational purposes, built at the level of Katherine Dunham Cultural Center, will include more than a hundred species, which will be identified in Creole and under their scientific names.

These species were selected on the basis of their therapeutic properties and their use in Haitian traditional medicine. In addition, other criteria such as the frequent use of medicinal species in other countries and their current scarcity in Haiti, were also used for the choice of species.

Currently, a team composed of botanist Marilise Rouzier, of the landscape architect Christine Chenet and agronomist Jean Daniel Lamy, Responsible Environment of the Park Martissant, are working to the establishment of the medicinal plant garden in Martissant.

The work of preparing soil began Monday, June 24, 2013 and very likely will end at the end of July or beginning of August 2013. Planting is underway in the flowerbeds already prepared.

The opening of the medicinal plant garden is planned for October 2013.

The medicinal plant garden will contribute to inform and educate the public in general and youth of Martissant in particular on the knowledge of traditional Haitian and foreign medicine. This garden is all the more important that its knowledge are often unknown to younger generations.
