Haiti - Social : Electric Cooperative Project in southern Haiti

National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) International has signed a $1.8 million contract with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to form the Haiti Rural Electric Cooperative (HREC) to serve 15,000 consumers in Roche-à-Bateau, Côteaux and Port-à-Piment on the southern coast of Haiti, NRECA announced.

UNEP and USAID are jointly sponsoring the project, which is being implemented by NRECA International and the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF). The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2015.

This is the second project NRECA International has won in the last two months that will bring safe, reliable and affordable electricity to Haiti. This project will upgrade the current mini-grid system of diesel generators and dramatically improve the distribution system. Also planned are smart meters and a photovoltaic solar array, in partnership with SELF.

Note that projects and programs of NRECA International have created more than 250 successful rural electric enterprises in Latin America, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Learn more about NRECA :

NRECA International Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NRECA, is dedicated to international economic development through electrification.
