Haiti - Environment : Signing of an agreement of nearly 6 million with Switzerland

Friday, as part of the implementation of a partnership between the Ministry of Environment and the Government of the Swiss Confederation, represented by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, a MoU was signed in the premises of the Ministry of Environment.

This agreement establishes the framework for global cooperation on environmental management in Haiti, and more particularly the implementation of Phase 4 of "Programme for preservation and enhancement of biodiversity" (PVB) at the level of Unit II of the pine forest in the Massif de la Selle, this program will extend over a period of 4 years (April 2013 - March 2017).

Mrs. Edita Vokral, Ambassador of Switzerland in Haiti, presented his plan for the success of this project while evaluating its execution to an amount of 5.5 Million Swiss Francs (± 5.9 million U.S. dollars) offered to Haiti. By signing, the Ambassador explained that this agreement took place within the context of strengthening of the Haitian government and that of Switzerland on Environmental Management and in particular of protected areas.

Jean François Thomas, the Minister of the Environment recalled for its part, the importance of the Year 2013 decreed in Haiti "Year of the Environment" and the willingness of his ministry to work to combat environmental vulnerability face its its degradation, boost national reforestation campaign and of sanitation and put back the body of environmental monitoring "We must seek a balance between the use and conservation of resources."
