Haiti - Economy : First Bilateral Business Summit

Tuesday, within the framework of first bilateral business summit, held under the auspices of the Faculty of Public and International Affairs at Florida International University (FIU), the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominicans Carlos Morales Troncoso and entrepreneurs of the two countries have met in Miami.

The summit aimed to analyze the challenges and obstacles threatening the relations between the two countries, but also to explore opportunities to improve trade relations between the two republics, after two months of tensions, due to commercial disputes, including the prohibition by Haiti, of the importation into its territory of poultry products from Dominican Republic.

Regarding measures of prohibitions, the Haitian government stated that these measures were not intended to affect the Dominican economy, but above all to protect the consumer, the economy and the environment of Haiti... At this meeting the Haitian entrepreneurs have expressed concern about the impact of Dominican products in Haiti, to the detriment of their own companies.

Recall that the balance of trade between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is very unbalanced. According to a statement of the Dominican Minister of Commerce, published in the Dominican newspaper "Hoy" on February 6, formal and informal exports from the Dominican Republic to Haiti during the year 2012 were estimated at nearly $2 billion, whereas Haitian exports, formal and informal to the Dominican Republic reached with difficult $100 million...
