Haiti - Politic : Laurent Lamothe at the General Assembly of the United Nations
On Sunday, Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, left Port-au-Prince at the head of a large delegation to represent Haiti at the 68th regular session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York from 22 to September 26, 2013. On Thursday, he will deliver a speech in which he will defend the national cause and bring Haiti's contribution to discussions on the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals and nuclear disarmament, which are the two main themes of this session.

He will take advantage to attract the attention of the international community on the progress made across the country in areas related to the fight against extreme poverty and building the rule of law, under the authority of President Michel Martelly.

This 68th Session will be, once again, an opportunity for the Prime Minister to share with other delegations of different achievements of the Administration Martelly, despite the difficulties of conjunctural order to which it faces.

Laurent Lamothe which is accompanied, among others, of Pierre Richard Casimir, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will also participate in several high-level meetings. On the sidelines of the 68th General Assembly, he was invited to a number of bilateral meetings during which will be discussed issues of common interest, for deepening the relations of friendship and cooperation with Haiti. Meetings with representatives of Singapore, Ecuador, New Zealand and Cuba are already planned in his agenda.

The Head of Government should sign several agreements and treaties relating to international trade, the protection of rights of migrant workers and members of their families, and to the arms trade. He will also sign the Convention against Torture, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings and the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.

Haiti's accession to the multilateral instruments of anti terrorism is part of discussions on disarmament and nuclear terrorism, organized this year by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
