Haiti - Economy : 112 million euros in budgetary support for the Haitian government

The granting of €112 MM of budgetary support, from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), mentioned by the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe at its recent meeting in Brussels with Andris Piebalgs, the European Commissioner for Development, was confirmed Monday by Ambassador the European Union (EU) in Haiti, Javier Nino Perez.

This direct budgetary support to the Haitian Government, will be added to an envelope of €420 million from the 11th EDF, for a total amount of €532 million for 2014-2020.

Javier Nino Perez explained "We intend more and more move towards budgetary support to Haiti. This form of cooperation involves transferring money directly to the state budget for that money does not get lost in the intermediate steps and that it can be managed by the government itself." He said wished that this financial support is accompanied by a dialogue with the government to put in place mechanisms to consider how this support will be used as efficiently as possible while emphasizing the need for transparency and mechanisms of control before, during and after the implementation of the programs.

"We will launch in October a process of dialogue with the government to address issues related to good governance, human rights, multilateral and security issues in the region," noting that 95% of aid of the EU to Haiti currently passed through the government, local institutions and civil society in Haiti "It is a particular feature of our cooperation, who prefer to be defined, set up and evaluated by the government [Haiti].""
