Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices (September 2013)

The level of the General Index of Consumer Price (base 100 in August 2004) for the month of September 2013, underwent a slight increase from 209.4 in August to 209.6, reflecting a slowdown in inflation in both monthly and annual rhythms. Indeed, on a monthly basis, inflation rose 0.1% in September against 0.3% in August, while the yoy which was 5.5% in August fell to 4.5% in September.

The monthly increase observed is the result of consumption functions "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" (+0.5%), "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" (+0.2%), "Development, Equipment and Housing Maintenance" (+0.2%) and "Health" (+0.8%).

For cons, the function "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" that represents more than 50% of the household budget still shows a downward trend (-0.1%).

Note that the increase in function "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" is explained by the higher cost of products such as fabrics (+1.3%), shirt (+1.8%), pants for men (+0.8%) and petticoat (+0.7%). The increase in "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" function comes only from the variation price of charcoal (+0.8%). The indice "Development, Equipment and Housing Maintenance" owes its upward progression to the evolution in the price of salon furniture (+1.0%), the mattresses, towels and wages of domestic workers respectively (+0.3%) and bed linen (+0.6%) and the rise of "Health" function is related to corrective eye glasses (+0.6%), the fees paid to doctors (+1.1%) and hospitalization (2.1%).

Finally, it should be noted that the decline in the "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" function is mainly due to the price of corn in grain (- 0.7%), ground corn (-0.9%), wheat (-0.7%) , lawyer (-1.5%), banana (-1.2%), giraumon (-1.0%), potatoes (-1.4%), breadfruit (-1.2%), orange (-1.5%) and chadèque (-1.9%).
