Haiti - Quebec : 412 bicycles for Ouanaminthe and Terrier Rouge

Sunday, volunteers of Cyclo Nord-Sud (Quebec) have put in container 412 bicycles as well as tools and building materials that will be sent to the Congregation of the Fathers of the Holy Cross in the north of Haiti to establish two parks of bicycles in Ouanaminthe and Terrier-Rouge.

The bicycle project also covers the development of mechanical workshops where young people learn to repair and maintain bicycles and build tricycles in order to promote cycling as a tool for work and development.

These are mainly local students who will benefit from bicycles in order to move effectively in school. The bicycles will be sold to the families of students and teachers at an affordable price, which will help young Haitians in rural areas to attend school on a regular basis and avoid many schoolchildren walking ten miles or more per day under the sun....

A bicycle improves mobility and access to services and resources in poor communities but also becomes a development tool to fight against poverty. Note that a bicycle is used by five to ten people on average for nearly 20 years.

Fifteen volunteers were meeting on Sunday to charge 412 bicycles for Haiti

Each year, some sixty collections across Quebec allow to amass nearly 4000 bicycles. In 14 years, more than 45,000 bicycles have been recovered and sent to 16 countries in Africa and Latin America, mainly in rural areas where transportation issues are more important. Parts and accessories, reach us from thirty bicycles shops of the metropolitan area. They will allow to repair and maintain that shipped.

In 2013, about 837 bicycles were sent to the Congregation of the Fathers of the Holy Cross, for a total of 5600 bicycles since 2006. Cyclo Nord-Sud's mission is to collect bicycles (parts, tools and accessories) unused in Quebec to ship them to impoverished communities in developing countries. In 14 years, more than 45,000 bicycles have been collected and sent to 16 countries in Africa and Latin America
