Haiti - Diaspora : A Haitian presides the Council of the City of Montreal

Earlier this week, Frantz Benjamin, of Haitian origin, was appointed President of the Municipal Council of the city of Montreal (Quebec, Canada). This is the first time in the history of the City Council, that a person of Haitian descent occupies such a position, mentioned Denis Coderre, the 44th Mayor of Montreal, which clarified that the appointment reflected the Montreal of today.

Note also that in the team of the Mayor Coderre, Monica Ricourt, born in Montreal-North of parents of Haitian origin, is Borough Councillor of Ovide-Clermont in Montreal North. She is also a member of the Committee on Public Safety and Member of the Board of Directors of the Société de transport de Montreal. Selected as one of 40 ambassadors of the Faculty of Political Science and Law, UQAM, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of this institution, in 2010 she received a tribute of the Roundtable of the Month of Black History.

While Nathalie Pierre-Antoine, also of Haitian descent, holder of a bachelor's degree in nutrition, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Management at McGill University and a Masters in Public Administration École nationale d’administration publique (ÉNAP), is Borough councillor at Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles.

Frantz Benjamin is currently a member of the commission on on culture, heritage and sports and member of the Commission on Social Development and the Montreal diversity. Elected as a Councillor in 2009 for the Saint-Michel district of the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension borough, Frantz Benjamin is also a Commissioner and Executive Committee member of the Pointe de l'Île school board. Involved in his community, Frantz Benjamin was notably President of the Intercultural Council of Montréal.
