Haiti - Education : Secondary renovated subjects taught and hourly load
After 7 years of experimentation on a sample of 158 public and private schools, the Haitian government through the Ministry of National Education has decided to gradually generalize the pilot experience engaged in the Haitian secondary since October 2007. This measure comes in the wake of the so-called reform of Bernard and education plans succeeding this one (PNEF, PO 2010-2015).

For the academic year 2015-2016 are affected by this decision, only students in the first year of secondary known under the name of Secondary I or S1 in the general education programs (2,300 establishments, 200 public and 2,033 private, affecting about 170,000 students) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15066-haiti-education-new-school-year-2015-2016-in-figures.html

The renovated secondary adopts the Approach By Skills (APC) as a model or predominant pedagogical practice. Other similar approaches can be added if requiered and progressively.

During the year of generalization of the experiment, a group of disciplines will be the subject of a particular approach to students and school teams, to put into practice the values for autonomy, sense of initiative and collaboration.

Around the following disciplines: Economics, IT, citizenship education, art education students in groups of 4, under the supervision of a tutor chosen in the school team or in the community, will conduct Supervised Work Groups (TEG) . The number of hours dedicated to this approach is 4 to 5 hours per week spread to the best of availability of school team.

These group work are aimed at organizing and diversify the modes of acquisition and restitution of knowledge on topics defined at national or departmental level. However, for this first year, the evaluation of these courses will not be taken into account to reach the next level.

In agreement with the school team teachers or school network (or tutor), students will delineate a contour of interest and explore it on the basis of documentary resources, guided observations or visits exploration. The appointed tutor will verify the construction of knowledge, validate the choices made and help to organize restitution of works by ensuring that they reflect the progress throughout the year.

Presentations of TGE will be done in the establishment or at the network of institutions and may lead to rewards, distinguishing the best student work.
