Haiti - Elections : The CEP adopts the majority of the Commission's recommendations 13/01/2016 09:25:14
The Mission takes note that, amongst other measures, the number of party representatives (mandataires) will be reduced to 38,000 and the representatives will only be able to vote at the polling station where they are registered. In addition, some polling station members will be replaced and presidential candidates will be allowed to appoint two representatives to supervise the work at the tabulation center. The training of electoral staff will be improved and lists and accreditation criteria for observation groups will be published before Election Day. The EOM/OAS reiterates the importance of addressing these and other matters to prevent the repetition of the irregularities presented in the August 9 and October 25 elections, urging the CEP to take all necessary measures to timely put them in place. In light of these efforts, the EOM/OAS calls upon the two run-off contenders to participate actively in the election. By doing so, they will respect the will of the Haitian electorate that voted for them on October 25. The EOM wishes to underscore the importance of having a competitive electoral process so that voters have options to express their political preferences. The OAS encourages all political actors to work together for the political, social, and economic development in Haiti. The EOM/OAS reiterates that the successful conclusion of the electoral process is not only the responsibility of the CEP and the government, but also of candidates and political parties, as well as Haitian citizens.
