Haiti - Elections : Canada offers its participation in the process of recount 13/12/2010 08:32:26 According to preliminary results released Tuesday night in Haiti, the second round will oppose the former First Lady and candidate Mirlande Manigat and the candidate of power Jude Célestin, but these results have led to violent protests that left several people dead in the country. "There is the opportunity to establish a joint international committee to oversee the recount of votes", said Lawrence Cannon, during an interview on the Canadian television channel CTV. "Canada has offered its cooperation and we expect additional information," he continued. Last Thursday, the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced a recount of votes, but Mirlande Manigat and Michel Martelly, came third, said they did not want to participate, emphasizing the political crisis. The verification process would be provided by a joint commission composed of the CEP, the presidential candidates concerned, national and international observers as well as partners from the international community. The Canadian foreign minister also said he discussed Friday with President René Préval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and expressed Canada's concerns about "irregularities" that occurred during the election, and Mr. Cannon has "encouraged to take steps to solve them [...] I got the assurances that this would be done" the minister said.
